How these figures were made

The small numbers after figure labels refer to this key. They show how a figure was made, not how accurate it is. Open any figure to see its source, date and important limits.

  1. Published figureTaken directly from the named source.
  2. Combined recordsSeveral published records combined into one total, average or summary.
  3. Model estimateEstimated by a model rather than measured at this postcode.
  4. Calculated from a mapWorked out by matching this postcode to features on a published map.

Council Air Quality Management Areas

Published council-wide context for councils linked to Brighton and Hove, not a finding about the whole place or a property.

These records are published for councils linked to known active postcodes in this place. The councils cover a wider area: a listed designation is not a finding that it intersects this town or any property. The list may not be exhaustive. AQMAs are management designations, not measured pollution concentrations, property exposure or clean-air charging zones. Absence of a designation is not evidence of clean air. Great Britain only; Northern Ireland mapping is not included.

Mapped Nitrate Vulnerable Zone records

Named records from the publisher’s mapped dataset intersecting the official Brighton and Hove settlement outline, including boundary contact.

These are named records in the publisher’s mapped 2021 Nitrate Vulnerable Zones dataset whose polygons intersect this place’s current official mapped settlement outline, including boundary-only contact. This does not mean the whole town or any property is in a zone. NVZ rules concern agricultural land management, not household restrictions or a measurement of nitrate or drinking-water safety. Absence of a listed record is not evidence of clean water. Historical/type and status labels are reproduced without interpreting their current legal force. England only; separate Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish regimes are not represented.

Mapped groundwater source protection categories

Original published categories whose polygons intersect the official Brighton and Hove settlement outline, including boundary contact.

These are original category codes and definitions from the retained Source Protection Zones (Merged) dataset whose polygons intersect this place’s official mapped settlement outline, including boundary-only contact. This is not a whole-town or property designation, a finding about a drinking-water supply, or evidence of contamination, water quality or risk. These definitions do not identify individual supplies. Dataset dates do not establish current legal status. Absence of a listed category does not establish that land or a property is outside a zone. England only; separate Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish regimes are not represented. Precautionary groundwater abstraction and land-use designation at a postcode centroid, not an address-level finding or drinking-water quality result. Outside a mapped zone does not establish clean or unprotected groundwater. Welsh zones and the separate Scottish and Northern Irish regimes are not represented.

  • Current water-supply and drought update: Despite recent rainfall and cooler weather, conditions remain drier than normal, with below average rainfall observed across all regions. For England as a whole, the rainfall total for August to date is 17% of the long term average (LTA). Rivers flows responded to the rainfall, however the majority of sites remain classed as below normal or lower for the time of year. A quarter of river sites, predominantly across southern and eastern areas, are classed as exceptionally low. The seasonal decline of groundwater levels continues, with levels in the chalk generally healthier than levels in the Oolite Limestone aquifers which are exceptionally low in places. Reservoir storage for England has declined 3.4% this week, down to 62.6% on 18 August. This is below average for the time of year. Seven major reservoirs are classed as having exceptionally low storage. There has been no change to Environment Agency area drought status this week, with 71% of England by land now in drought. Water companies continue to face sustained high demand due to the long period of warm weather and reduced rainfall. Affinity Water expanded its temporary use ban (TUB) across its eastern region on 17 August and Wessex Water implemented a company wide TUB on 18 August. Approximately 29 million people now have restrictions on their use of water. The agricultural sector is under increasing pressure, with poor crop yields and reduced grass growth affecting livestock farmers. There are reports of agricultural boreholes drying up and farm reservoirs at critically low levels. Over 1,500 abstraction licence restrictions are currently in place, including mandatory section 57 spray irrigation reductions in East Anglia and a growing number of voluntary restrictions across several catchments. Root crop harvesting is expected to be challenging due to exceptionally hard ground conditions. Environmental impacts are also increasing. Since the start of 2026, 226 drought and dry weather related incidents have been recorded, including: Navigation across reservoir fed canals are increasingly affected by low levels, while river navigation routes remain more resilient. Many canals are open for navigation, but an increasing number of closures and restrictions are being reported. The Environment Agency continues its drought response, including activated incident management arrangements and increased environmental monitoring. The National Drought Group will now meet weekly to coordinate action and monitor risks as drought conditions continue. The Environment Agency's own summary, verbatimDry weather and drought status reports · 2026-08-21 · Representative location

  • Coastal erosion exposure: Outside every mapped coastal erosion risk zone. The nearest is 1993 m away on the Beachy Head to Selsey Bill shoreline management plan, where the long-term plan is Hold The Line. Along this frontage the Environment Agency projects cumulative erosion of 25–61 m by 2055 and 99–108 m by 2105 if the coast here is not maintained. With the shoreline management plan delivered there is no projection at all: the Environment Agency does not issue one where the plan is to hold the line for the full period to 2105, so the figures above are what this coast is projected to do if that defence is not maintained. Each range spans the present-day, higher-central and upper-end sea level allowances, and each figure is a cumulative total by that year rather than a yearly rate.Whether this postcode falls inside a mapped coastal erosion risk zone, and what is projected for the coast thereNational Coastal Erosion Risk Mapping (NCERM) — National (2024) · 2024 · Representative location
